Top 100 Indie Singles Listed By Rough Trade

In 1999 a letter with the name ROUGH TRADE printed on the letterhead landed in a mailbox in Stockholm. It started with a simple "Hiya, Here Is Our Top 100" and what followed was 106 singles and EPs listed by Rough Trades own indie expert Sean to be published in the last issue of Pop. Yes, 106. No we don't know if Sean is really bad with math or just couldn't help himself and added a couple of extra ace tracks.

Anyway, we've decided to play these singles on Saturday. These bits of vinyl mean the world to us and are a big part of why we started So Tough! So Cute! so please come and join us for this trip.

As with the "De 100 Bästa Indiepopsinglarna (Någonsin)" party there will be a list where we'll be ticking off each track and hopefully you'll find a new favourite.

It took us 12 years to track these singles down and we do have quite a lot of them but far from all so if you happen to have any of them please bring it with you on the night and we'll play it.

Too Cute To Puke Friday 20th January in Malmö

We are very happy to announce that Too Cute To Puke has moved to a new venue, the beautiful Moriska Paviljongen in Malmö Sweden, and we hope that you will all come along to help start what will hopefully be a long series of parties bringing girls to the front.

Taking the 70s UK punk scene as a starting point with the Slits and Raincoats up front, our playlist will travel back to the 50s and 60s and its soul and r'n'b sisters, girl-group, yé-yé and garage girls, forward to the 80s post-punk ladies, indie pop, noise pop and new wave girls, through the 90s riot grrrls and land somewhere in the now. It'll be all girls, it'll be both hits and rare tunes and it'll be fabulous.

Thanks everybody for kicking off the year with us! A slow but growing start as expected when our friends in Function Malmö held their 5 anniversary party across the road but on the other hand we got some great dedicated dancers on the floor.

Definite highlight of the night was Allo Darlin' - Capricornia, which we played twice and could have played ten more times as it's just a jaw dropping amazing song. A surprise was Pushy Parents - Secret Secret filling the floor and, our hands down, favourite moment of the night was playing Mika Miko - Capricorinations with the dancefloor going into a frenzy and people actually singing - well I wouldn't call it singing more like mad shouting - along. We remember when we first fell in love with this song and were emptying floor after floor. But yesterday? Hallelujah!

Hello, here comes our list of records and releases of 2011. We bought 263 records in total - mostly vinyl and cassettes but a few cds and digital releases. According to last.fm we listened to a little over 36000 tracks during the past year. Which is a lot. And hence a long list. Pheromoans pretty muched ruled this year for us as well as Salsa Chips, Dear Marje, Bleached, P.S. Eliot off shoots Swearin' and Bad Banana and off course our darling Aidan Moffat with Bill Wells. Late comers Nälkä demo kicked our teeth in and they better have a proper release out next year!

Year's Not Long

Whilst preparing what to play at tonights New Years disco at How Does It Feel in Brixton London we thought we should recap 2011. It feels like the year just ran away from us in January already and we've been playing catch up since then. We fell crazy behind on new music discoveries and compiling mixtapes due to life and jobs getting in the way, but on the other hand we did tons of club nights, bought loads of records and made lots of new friends but also lost a few on the way. So it was a pretty swell year all in all.

This is what we did manage to accomplish this year in terms of music and clubbing:

- Our femme fronted music only club night Too Cute To Puke really got going and is probably the most satisfying thing we've done this year. We've got big plans coming up for TCTP in 2012!

- We did a total of 28 So Tough! So Cute! and Too Cute To Puke nights in the UK and in Sweden including tons of guest-DJ sets that took us to London, Göteborg, Lund, Copenhagen and Helsinki.

- There's been quite a bit of heated discussion in Sweden concerning venues, festivals and clubs not booking female artists so we're very happy to say that, out of 21 guest-DJ sets at STSC, 12 of those were done by ladies.

-We had 9 guests compiling some pretty awesome mixtapes for the blog so thank you Jaspin of Hissyfit, Freya of La La Vasquez, Sven-Eric & Ola of KlubbIndiean, the Mongonaut, Ylwa, Elina of You Are The Light, Luke of Sex Beet, the Poppets and Skinny Girl Diet.

There are so many moments that made this year an amazing year and it is a futile task to list them all but there are a couple of special ones we have to mention that really stuck to our memory: The Broder Daniel special which saw Retro set a new attending record and kids dressing up like nineties indie pandas like it was, well, the nineties; Spanish speaking dancers exploding in smiles when we put on Davila 666 version of Hanging On The Telephone; everybody singing along to Beat Happening - Teenage Caveman at the Beat Happening and Vaselines special, everytime we played Another Sunny Day - You Should All Be Murdered, GG Allin - Don't Talk To Me or Crass - Banned From The Roxy; the 25th February when we clashed with London Popfest and thought that the venue would be empty but then instead had one of the best nights ever; the first few songs of Bob Stanleys DJ-set when there was only us, a few early bird friends and the rest of St Etienne chugging bubbly wine and dancing on the dancefloor; the '100 Best Indiepop Singles (Ever)' special where we played the list in order and had people squeezing in front of the poster with all the songs that we had stuck up on the wall; and last but not least: everybody making out at basically every night in the UK.

A couple of thank yous: Guest-DJs and mixtape compilers - thank you so much for taking the time and doing this with us. Clubs that have booked us; the bar staff at the Drop and at Retro and our amazing door boy and girl: Roland and Gemma and Gracie for hooking us up with them; Jassiie Freak for a lot of the club photos and love and support; Sandra for a bed in the UK, everybody who helped flyer in London and poster boy extraordinaire Catalan for plastering Malmö with posters and everybody else we might have forgotten. Here's a drink to you all and we'll see you in 2012.

We've had an uncontrollable urge to pogo since our last punk special so we've decided to put on another on under the name B'dum B'dum. So please come down, have a few, sniff some glue, jump up'n'down for a bit and have a snog in the toilets.

We'll be playing '77-'81-ish UK punk, Power pop goes punk, Nuggets, Garage Pop, KBD, Proto-punk, Garage Punk revival. Sorry, no Crust or HC. We're too twee for that sort.

Yes, oh bloody hell yes, we're going to Finland! Home of vodka, great films and of course one of the truest and most evil Black metal bands ever: Impaled Nazarene. ~~God~~ we love the Ugra Karma LP.

Anyway, where were we? Oh yes, we've been invited to play records at You Are The Light in Helsinki Finland. As you might recall Astro-Sofia played ST!SC! in London in October - such a great set - and now it's our turn to return the favour. We've been looking forward to this immensly these last few weeks and already have the records packed, passport renewed, shirts pressed and brogues polished.. It's going to be amazing. As the nights theme is Girl-groups we'll bring plenty of girltastic and ye-ye records with us! See you all on Friday!

Woah, the Vaselines and Beat Happening special filled up quite nicely didn't it? We had a great time finishing up our 2011 season in Malmö. Our favourite part of the evening was the one-two knock out punch of Mika Miko - Capricorinations and Trash Kit - Natascha which worked amazingly well and the goose bumps we got from everybody singing along to the "We cry alone" bit in Beat Happening - Teenage Caveman. Beautiful.

Welcome to a twee-pop-punk-a-go-go-spectacular!

We finish up the season at Retro in Malmö with a night celebrating the Vaselines and Beat Happening, two of our all time favourite bands who, on a summer night in London 1988, shared a stage and instruments and taught the anoraks how to rock'n'roll. This gig in turn ended up on an amazing and extremely rare split cassette put out on Calvin Johnsons own K records in 1991. Cover drawn by Aggi from some Scottish band called the Pastels.

We'll play all the tracks off the cassette and many more Vaselines and Beat Happening favourites and mix it up with C86, Twee, Indiepop, Soul and Girl-groups.

So come on down for a night that will make you feel like waking up in the morning, going to the sea side and realizing you're a horse and gallop about. And please, remember to keep your recess voices outside.

There's no doubt about it. This is the sound of our world. This is what we hope to find every single time we listen to a new song from a new band. Old bands as well actually. The sounds Delilah and Ursula Holliday together with Amelia Cutler make in Skinny Girl Diet grabs us by the hair and headbutts our teeth in in slow motion whilst playing the Pop Group & The Slits split out of boom box in the adjoining room. On tape. With dying batteries.

No idea when they are going to release something proper but you'll find a couple of tracks on soundcloud as well as on myspace(?!)

We come full circle tomorrow when we play records after the Help Stamp Out Loneliness gig in Copenhagen (a first one in Denmark for us). This circle started a fairly long time ago when we played records after the great Language Of Flowers in Lund. Ah the glory days of Indiepop gigs in Lund. If we remember correctly we played an all-girl indiepop set followed by a northern soul and Motown set, so what better when to follow up with a similar theme tomorrow when we play at Poetry In Monos last party for 2011.

Help Stamp Out Loneliness released a really good record on Where It's Is Where You Are which should be on top of your listening pile. Particularly the song Record Shop is ace and worth a couple a spins a day.

Now this. This is going to be awesome. Psych club Radio Syd and us will be putting on the Horrors after-party with the amazing Rhys 'Spider' Webb of Londons feet stompin' Cave Club playing some fine records.

Despite us sharing the Buffalo Bar while we were doing the Baby Honey club we never actually met Rhys but word of his record collection and go go inducing sets reached us far far over international waters and countries vast. Ok our friend Gracie told us over a pint. And then other people told us over a pint. And then Marcus Cawood from Radio Syd told us. Also over a pint. So here we are. Drunk of our arse and with a great happening planned.

What a hootenanny we had last night! Started off kinda mellow with people mostly drinking, listening and chatting but when we got into the wee hours the frenzy began. The Frenzy! And yes, we're mentally fourteen years old for thinking so but the highlight of the evening was playing The Magnetic Fields - Too Drunk To Dream and Dead Kennedys - Too Drunk To Fuck back to back.

We've been wanting to another artist special and with the summer being over and the autumn cold creeping in we thought to ourselves: who should we celebrate that is the indiepop equivalent of a warm Pendleton blanket?

So we're happy to say that we'll be having a the Magnetic Fields special. We'll be playing our favourite Stephin Merritt penned songs throughout the night so expect to hear tracks from the Magnetic Fields starting with the debut Distants Plastic Trees and also his other projects Gothic Archies, the 6ths and Future Bible Heroes.

Joining us behing the decks is Ylwa Skywalker and we'll play a smoothie style mix of Indiepop, Girl-groups, Pop Punk and Soul so we hope to see you in Malmö tonight!

So yeah, we played the best 100 Indiepop Singles (ever) as listed by the Swedish magazine Pop in 1999 and it was amazing fun! People ran from the dancefloor to the big lists of songs we put on the wall and then back again. We so have to do something like this again. De 100 Bästa Indiepopsinglarna (Någonsin) - The 100 Best Indiepop Singles (Ever) on 17th Sept at Retro in Malmö

We've decided to celebrate the start of our autumn season by playing all 100 hundred songs listed in the last issue of Pop. Starting with Broder Daniel - I'll Be Gone and around 21:15 and ending with Pere Ubu - Final Solution at 3 in the morning. These are the songs that prompted us to start clubs like So Tough! So Cute!, Popscene, First Class Riot and You Can't Hide Your Love Forever. Some of the songs were hits, some not, some you may have heard before while others will be new to you but they all keep the Indiepop flame burning. Please join us as we go back through indiepop history!

It was late in 1999 the best Swedish music magazine there ever was, Pop, ended it's magnificent run and put out it's last ever issue with a sad looking Bobby Gillespie on the cover. Between a nineteen (19!) page feature with Kevin Rowland in a pink dress and interviews with a grumpy Moe Tucker, Brian Wilson, Pavement and other articles there was a chronological list of the 100 best indiepop singles (ever) put together by the Pop staff. Indiepop being defined as guitar rock released on small independent labels from 1976. It was amazing list in the eyes of a wee lad who had spent the nineties listening to, well, let's just say non-indiepop music (ok Black Metal).

We spent almost two years were spent tracking down these singles, remember, there wasn't any proper file sharing back then, and every song that we got our hands on, weather it was on a crackly vinyl or a low bitrate mp3 of a crackly vinyl, put a big smile across our face. But even before we tracked them all down a long lasting love for all things indiepop had been established almost immediately during the first read of the article because of the passionate notes that accompanied every song.

(And yes, we're going to try and play all songs from original seven inches. We have more than half of them but far from all so if you happen to have any of them please bring it with you on the night and we'll play it.)

Thanks everybody for turning out despite the rain! We had tons of fun and even live facebooked most of the set during the night, getting live feedback from the dance floor and people in other countries. So much fun! Highlights was playing Fear Of Men - Pink Frost, which is just so good, La La Vasquez - Other Side from their new 7" split with Neonates, Jacuzzi Boys - Cool Vapors, Hungry Gayze - Pins & Needles, Veronica Falls - Come On Over and the amazing studio demo punk version of the Cure - I'm Cold.

Our next night is the season premiere of So Tough! So Cute! in Stoke Newington London on August 26th. We've been looking forward immensely for this all summer and hope to see all you UK friends there.

But more importantly we've book flights to London because on August 26th we're finally back in Stoke Newington! Yay!

Wow. That was really something. A million thanks to everybody who came dressed up and in a mood for a party and made the Broder Daniel special one of the most fun nights since the inception of the club. Bloody hell. Never heard that much singing along before to be honest.

The pandas were broken out the zoo, the first one after just half an hour, but we hope they've found a new and happy home. Every now and again we put on a record at our nights in the UK that gets half the crowd screaming in joy and leaves the other half standing baffled to the side looking at ensuing chaos on the dance floor. It's a very fun and strange phenomenon and tends to happen during the last hour of the night*. The record is Underground by Broder Daniel, the people dancing are Swedes and the ones to the side are Londoners. You can see this happen at the London Popfest last year about 1 minute in.

*May or may not have something to do with the DJs level of sobriety.

We find it hard to explain what made Broder Daniel one of the best bends in Sweden. Barely able to play their instruments or sing they managed with their distorted guitar noises and lyrics to deal with teenage angst, growing up and everything just being so... oh god. I'm not really writing this crap am I?

Broder Daniel is about going to a dance, not getting friends, falling in love with a girl that has a boyfriend, getting her for a while and then not being able to stand her anymore. And being Luke Skywalker. Oh Yeah yeah yeah. Oh wow wow wow.

The great veggie event Vegomässan is on this weekend in Malmö Sweden with lots and lots of yummy food so to celebrate we decided to have a Meat Is Murder special as we are on on the same day! The plan is to play a track of the Smiths album spread out throughout the night starting 2230 and then every half hour. The rest of the night will be filled to the brink with pop punk, soul scorchers and indiepop like Hefner, The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart, Ride, Cure, Shop Assistants, Stone Roses, Field Mice, Belle & Sebastian, Crystal Stilts, Pulp and more.

This first year of doing the night in London has been so much fun that everytime we come back to Sweden we can barely wait to be back in the UK. While preparing for Friday nights anniversary celebration we have been looking back at old playlists, mixtapes and lists. It's been a bit weird and definitely two quite nostalgic days of digging up seven inch records, LPs and CDs and just listening through tracks that made us fall in love with indiepop, twee, C86 and the whole anorak scene. A lot of these song we still love and play to this day while other just make us wince - Duglasettes, we're looking at you. But these songs are what sparked our wee little club and each and everyone bring up fun memories. And we can't believe how many of these people that were involved at the time we've actually met and even had quite a few play our night.

Anyway, we put these tracks in a folder and thought you might like to hear what got our hearts racing a little over ten years ago. Here you go: One hundred tracks that let us know that pop love might just save the world.

So yeah, we had a bit of a break from putting together mixtapes - life, work and beers in the sun got in the way - but today we're back with a selection of amazing records that have been piling up by our decks. Lots of neat songs fit for commuting teenage delinquents in love with pop, punk, bleeding knees and uhm.. holding hands.

Our favourite track of the bunch is probably Bleached who are the Clavin sisters from Mika Miko. No Friend Of Mine just knocks our socks off every time we put it on. The Bass Drum Of Death track has also been going on repeat at Casa de So Tough.

Bob Stanley of Saint Etienne, one of our favourite bands ever, and a record collector supreme will be spinning his favourite songs at Retro after the Saint Etienne gig at Babel. This makes us very very very happy. We've been big fans of the mixes, lists and articles Bob has put together and music Saint Etienne has referenced and have discovered so many great songs that Saturday should be an epic event. Hope to see you there.

One Year Anniversary! Indiepop & Sixties Soul special 27th May in London

Hope you're having a fab weekend. This is just a quick note to let you know that the next night in London will mark our one year anniversary of doing the club in Stoke Newington and also the season finale as we'll take a short break over the summer to rest up and dig through as many record crates as we possibly can for a smashing return on the 26th August.

Since it's not only our anniversary but also the 25th anniversary of the C86 tape we thought we'd go back to our tweepop and indiepop roots. Expect loads of Creation, Sarah, Postcard, Subway Organization, 53rd & 3rd, K, Ron Johnson, Slumberland records band mixed up with sixties northern soul and Motown as well as the best girl-groups.

We're also going to go all in with a dress code - since it is a special occasion after all. If you have a striped or polka dotted t-shirt/dress/shirt you get a pound note off on the door.
