Guest Mixtape 08: So Tuff BRGR by Burger Records

"What are you doing here? This is a private girls only party!" from Garbo's Daughters debut cassette was the first we heard from Burger Records from Fullerton California. This was in January and since then we've been hooked - hooked like the Unpopular Boy getting hooked on nicotine just to get inside Popular Girl Who Sits And Smokes At The Bus Stop skinny jeans  - so we quickly ordered a bunch a tapes and started digging backwards and forwards through their catalogue, falling in love with Jaill, Apache, Audacity, Nobunny and Fever B whose song Pop Punk Love we even named our three day popfest after.

Sean and Lee described Burger Records as being "a rock n roll philanthropic quasi-religious borderline-cultish propaganda spreading group of suburban perma-teen mutants." and we can't really argue with that. And since our goal with these mixtapes is to spread the gospel and we really can't think of any other labels whose releases we've listened as much to this year we figured it's only fitting that we let the guys'n'gals at Burger do our last guest mixtape for 2010.

Hope you like it and if you do please head over to http://burgerrecords.webs.com/ and order a bunch of tapes and records and those awesome super sized I'm A Burger Girl/Boy-badges. We've been wearing ours since we got them and our love life hasn't been the same since! Also take a look at the Burger Facebook page as they put on awesome shows and movie nights all the time. Thanks guys for a great mixtape!

Sex Beet, Friday Casuals and the playlist from Too Cute To Puke #02 at Tempo Bar & Kök

What a great chaos and fun filled week! Sex Beet and Jerry Tropicano each played an ace gig and we were transported from a snowed in Malmö to a drunken summer beach parties in Dalston with the police busting in and everything. Which, of course, doesn't make any sense but I guess you had to be there. Thanks to the brave ones who fought the weather and came down and helped out with gas money. We had a great time and guest-dj Krister of  Record Turnover played some rather lovely tunes.

Krister also joined us at the Friday Casual where we played a short set of anglophile pop and dubstep to a crowd of anarcho punks. That was very interesting and the place was on fire! Literally.

Finally we were back at Tempo Bar & Kök for our second Too Cute To Puke night. We are really starting to enjoy these girl fronted nights. We played a bit more pop this time to fit in with the lovely x-mas decorations and mood. Really fun and as always the staff and guests were super nice.

The Friday Casual

Hey, just a quick announcement. We're now part of the Friday Casual, a group of friends with a taste for punk, pop, ska, house, disco, northern and modern soul, glamrock, pints of IPAs and bitters, cycling, football, fish'n'chips, the Pickwick and fine clothing playing records at the lovely downstairs of Rex in Malmö. We're playing today Friday between 21-01.

Bookmarks and RSS updates

Hey, you may have noticed that our latest mix went down yesterday because Blogger got a complaint. Instead of the copyright holder contacting us and asking us to remove his track, which we happily would have, them filing a complaint caused Blogger to take down the entire post. Fair enough as those are the rules, but what bugs us about having the entire mix taken down is that a lot of these artist actually thanked us putting them on the mix and retweeted and help spread the word themselves. It quite frankly sucks as we're trying to promote music we really really like with others, who will also hopefully continue to support these artists buy buying records, mp3s and merch and going to gigs.

Anyhoo. Instead of realising too late that we should have created a back-up should Blogger decide to delete us, we've actually already done so if that should happen everything will be transferred to a new providerrr.... Okay, this is  just sounding silly. Look if this blog goes down we're moving to wordpress is what we're trying to say

Please change your bookmarks to www.sotoughsocute.com and please change your RSS-subscription to feeds.feedburner.com/sotoughsocute or press this fancy button. Mmm fancy button... press it...

Add to Google

This way, should the blog go down you won't notice anything except us being totally inept at getting the other blog design to look even remotely good.

The photo is from the book Mix Tape: The Art of Cassette Culture edited by Thurston Moore. Painting is by Tom Sachs and we have no idea who took the photo.

Mixtape: Judy Is A Punk And Jackie's Never Coming Back

It’s been a bit chilly lately so to keep you warm here’s the latest batch of our not so monthly mixtapes. So snug up with a blanket, woolly socks, some mulled wine - or as we call it in Sweden “glögg” - and some nice mouldy cheese and gingerbread (you gotta taste to believe it) and have a listen. Just turning the heat up and having a shot of vodka is also ok. But drink responsibly. So Tough! So Cute! cares.

There are some great tracks in here that make us go all warm and fuzzy inside. We’ve got brand new tracks off the upcoming albums with Silver Shampoo, Veronica Falls and Chain And The Gang plus tracks from Tyvek and everybodys favourite bearded Scotsman Aidan John Moffat new full lenghts (have you seen Moffats 7” LP? Drop. Dead. Gorgeous). Lust-Cats of the Gutters and Bad Banana have, so far download only, teasers of hopefully upcoming releases which will own next year and Hunx and his Punx have finally embraced their inner girl-group. The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart, Sourpatch and The Hobbes Fanclub keep the indie pop dance floor poppin’ and for the punks we’ve got a nice live version of The Falls Guest Informant with Brix up front with Mark E Smith, the party starters that are Funstix and Sex Beet who’ll be playing at our next club night. Hope you like this and please keep buying releases and going to the gigs.

But but but… what about the best of 2010 list? Well we think it’s still a bit early so we’re going to play it like this: We’ll have a special guest mixtape up in about two weeks and just when you’ve sobered up after New Years Eve we’ll have our best of 2010 list for you waiting here.

Judy Is A Punk And Jackie’s Never Coming Back

2. Tyvek - 4312

Friday 26th Nov. So Tough! So Cute! club night at the Drop in Stoke Newington

And so it begins! The first of our monthly nights in Stoke Newington! We'll be spinning, pogoing and bopping along to heartracing Northern Soul, limp wristed jangly Indie Pop and bedroom DIY, Tamla Motown, late seventies/early eighties pop punk love, sixties Girl Groups and new crushes like Colleen Green, Seapony, Veronica Falls, Spectrals, Nobunny, Hunx & His Punks, La La Vasquez, Best Coast, 'Allo Darlin, Las Robertas, Wavves and Wild Nothing.

Straight outta Gothenburg, Sweden we've invited the manic record collector The Mongonaut, who played an amazing set with us this summer which got the whole Pop Punk Love festival sweatin', bumpin' and grindin' (obviously in a very polite indiepop way). So put on your best pair of brogues or chucks and come dance with us!

Guest Mixtape 07: A So Tough! So Cute! mix by Colleen Green

Art by Colleen Green
Big day for us at the STSC headquarters as we have a mixtape to offer you by the faboulous Colleen Green! We've been eagerly awaiting a proper realease after being run over by on her amazing tracks 4 Loko 2 Kayla, Dance The Night Away and Green One on her myspace which sent us dancing (more like awkwardly shuffling) and looking for an excuse to go over to that Special Person and ask if they wanted to go outside for a smoke and make-out.

Ace label Art Fag Recordings, who have released other So Tough favourites like Las Robertas, Best Coast and Internet Forever, has heard our prayers it seems and will hopefully be releasing an EP sometime soon, and 4 Loko 2 Kayla will be out on a vinyl 7" as well in early 2011. Though you can still buy tapes and the 4 Loko 2 Kayla CD-Rs on the Colleen Green Myspace.

Colleen also has the funny Happy Birfday Jeff blog which features a lot of dope smokin' adventures and being on tour with Girlfriends but our favourite is the Real Shit Daily! tumblr where's she puts up her super cool comics. Here's the mix she made for us with her comments, hope you like it!

Here is a mix I made.  I wasn't trying to show off or anything, I just put a bunch of songs by bands I really, really like.  I also repped my home state of Massachusetts pretty hard.  I am an ass though for not putting any Lemonheads, Dinosaur Jr., or Sebadoh. Oh well. Hope you all enjoy this poppy shit.

U + ME - Colleen Green
A brand new song by Yours Truly.

Eye of Fatima - Camper Van Beethoven
This song rules. I first heard it on Sublime's acoustic album. Bradley Nowell had excellent taste in music.

Strings - Blink 18
An old classic by one of my favorite bands of all time.

Summertime - Bugs And Rats
My favorite current Boston band. My old band used to play with them all the time and we shared a practice room too.  So heavy, so druggy, they have been a huge influence on me for years.

GCF - Descendents
All I want is some good clean fun! Well, that's not true.

It's Not Right - Devo
"I sit around in a trance all day and think about you all the time..."

La La Love You - Pixies
I often find myself wishing that I could write songs as simultaneously poppy and weird as The Pixies. I read the ad that Frank Black posted in the Phoenix in the 80s looking for a female band mate one time.  It was pretty cool.

King Tubby's Conversation Dub - King Tubby
No song that has ever appeared on a Trojan Records compilation has ever been bad.

Dark Shades - Splinters
The Splinters are an awesome all girl band from Oakland, CA. Their new album "Kick" is really good and this is one of my favorite songs from it.

Insanity Plea - Teen Idols
Classic tale of "I'm gonna kill myself if you break up with me." "...And if that doesn't work I'm going to kill you."

Attack Of The Ghost Riders - Raveonettes
I first found out about the Raveonettes from MTV, can you believe it???? I saw this video on a special thing they were doing about "indie" bands.  I've loved them ever since.  Me, Kayla, and Nate went to see them one time at The Paradise in Boston, and it was really awesome.  I was super high, which ruled and all, but I wished I had been on something slightly more psychedelic.

I Found The Star - Fastbacks
The Fastbacks are one of my FAVORITE bands ever. I've never heard a song by them I didn't like, except maybe that Bee Gees cover.

Lazy - Drexel
This Boston band was a huge part of my life from the ages of 14-22 maybe? Me and all my friends loved them and used to go see them all the time at various VFWs, KofCs, Elks Lodges, high school football fields, and various clubs in the Boston area.  Eventually me and my friend Jenna ended up working for their record company, a tiny independent label run out of Allston, MA called Fork in Hand Records.  But seriously, I've loved all their music for years and I met a lot of my best friends through going to Drexel shows and hanging out in that scene.

Steppin Razor - Sublime
I was obsessed, literally obsessed, with Sublime from 6th-10th grade.  They were the first "rock n roll" band I got into, and through their music I learned about a lot of other bands that became pretty important to me.  This song is off "Robbin' the Hood" which doesn't sound amazing but a lot Sublime's best songs are on here.  I've always loved their experimental/improvisational nature and their DIY /fuck you attitude.  Plus, they smoke mad weed.

Sugar - Superdrag
Superdrag is one of my favorite bands from the 90s. "Regretfully Yours" left a huge impression on me when I first heard it. I wish I could make songs that sound exactly like them. I like this song because it's about drugs and love.

Your Girlfriends - Damone
When this song was recorded and originally released, this Boston band was still known as Noelle (after their 15 year old singer, Noelle). I love this song! The original guitarist, Dave Pino, was a founding member of another one of my favorite Boston bands Superglue, then went on to form Waltham, and now allegedly plays guitar in Powerman 5000.

Die Polize - The Lot Six
This is a rowdy jam from another of my favorite Boston bands of all time, The Lot Six.  They were a great rock n roll band and their shows were always super fun.

Hard To Admit - Off With Their Heads
I still think about him every day, I'm not ashamed to admit it.

Arsenal Compliments Wardrobe - Big Big Bucks
My buddies!!! I love The Big Big Bucks! I've played a million shows with them and we went on tour together one time too.  We smoke all the weed together and they call me "sis".  All four members are pretty amazing musicians, and they are currently playing some of the most fucked up pop music in Boston.

Pato And Roger A Go Talk - The English Beat
I really like "Rotating Head" a lot better, but I recently put that on a mix I made for someone else, and I wanted to mix it up a bit.  This song rules too though.  I'm obsessed with British Reggae.

THE END!!!!

DJ-set on Nov 5th. at Klubb Indigo at Blekingska Nationen in Lund

Hey all, we're happy to announce that we're playing records at Klubb Indigo in Lund this Friday. It's at Blekingska Nationen - holy indiepop ground here in southern Sweden to say the least. We've had tons of fun here in the past, like on the night with the Tough Alliance madness - top 10 shows ever! -  and are happy to have been invited again. Please come down and have a fun night with us. We'll be playing our specially roasted blend of Indiepop, sixties Soul, Pop and Girl-group and tons of other stuff to keep your feet stomping.

This is a student nation so you'll need student ID to be able to get in. The rules for non-Lund students kinda go over our heads  - hey' we're record geeks, we're too busy remembering catalogue numbers - so we asked our friends Copy & Paste to explain it all:
För att komma in krävs nationsmedlemskap. Är man studerande på annat universitet eller högskola så går det bra att köpa gästleg för 50 spänn, senast samma eftermiddag som klubben kör (det är vårt quratel som har rätt att utfärda gästleg, men det går att boka gästleg på distans, om man mejlar bild på giltigt fotoleg och studentleg.)
See you there!

Video from Splash One Happening + Mixtape

This is just too cool! Video footage from club Splash One Happening, partly run by Bobby Gillespie between 1985 and 1986 in Glasgow, has turned up on youtube with a very young stripey shirted Bobby G dancing about with Duglas of BMX Bandits,  NME writer and Razorcuts drummer David Swift and also Stephen Pastel according to Andy Hart. Simply amazing to be able to see this! The clothes, the haircuts and how fun everybody seems to have dancing about to fantastic music - which we can't help but think would empty dancefloors today. Here's the video:

While googling for more info we found a very cool tracklist for one of the tapes played on the night when Sonic Youth played. Apparently there was no vinyl flippin' DJs but rather pre-recorded mixtapes compiled by the Splash One members. The tracklist is from now defunct Splash One Happening blog and in need of something to brighten up this rainy wednesday we've compiled all the tracks in a handy downloadable zip-file. Enjoy!

Guest Mixtape 06: The Bean Scene by David Feck of Comet Gain

Art by David Feck
Voila! Here it is! The mixtape by David Feck of Comet Gain! Twentyone tracks selected by one of our favourite songwriters and namedroppers. Comet Gain have always referenced other songs and bands and with us being suckers for pop cultural references we've always enjoyed the musical history filtered through Comet Gain shambling pop. Weather it's playing live with songs transforming into Teardrop Explodes - Sleeping Gas, sneaking in lyrics from the Byrds - Chestnut Mare like when they played the Buffalo Bar in London or just the pure meta joy that is the song Record Collection it always sent us running for the original. We love being able to take a part of the music that inspire bands we like so this is treat for us. Thank you so much David.

Comet Gain are currently recording a new album which will hopefully be out early next year but you can still pick up The Weekend Dreams split and the I Never Happened single (aw crap, it's sold out) and the Cinema Red And Blue LP which is joint effort by Comet Gain and Crystal Stilts with help by Gary Olson of The Ladybug Transistor, Hamish Kilgour from The Clean and Amy Linton of Henry’s Dress and The Aislers Set .

Flying Nun label mystery monks. I dig Chills most but Verlaines are great odd pop
7. Clarence Carter - Can't Leave Your Love Alone
Blind soul dude
8. American Music Club - Heaven In Your Hands
The beautiful sad genius of Mark Eitzel - this song has beautiful words
9. Blue orchids - Work
Ex-Fall members drone groove prole mong

Mixtapes: It's Not Fair What You Do To Me + Talkin' 'Bout The New Dance Craze

Ah crap. We're sorry. We promised you the awesome mixtape David Feck of Comet Gain kindly made us but it is currently stuck in a box being UPS'd from London to Malmö. As soon as we get it we'll put it up here.

In the meantime we have not one but two mixtapes of our own for you. Lots of awesome songs that we've spun repeatedly on our recordplayer and our current crush Skinned Teen actually appears twice. Love this band to death. Also two other strong female fronted bands that may very well end up on our year list. The Super Wild Horses and The Splinters album are both delightful. Actually several of the featured bands are strong contenders for that list. It's been a great year and we look forward hearing what these last few months will bring us. A special thanks to our favourite Mongonaut for pointing us in the direction of some of these tracks while we were stuck in the black hole that is Virgin Medias excuse for broadband. As always, please support the artist by going to shows and buy their records and cassettes. Their myspace pages usually contain info on distros. Hope you enjoy these two mixtapes.
