Too Cute To Puke with Alice Samoilova on the 13th December

We've been falling a bit behind with telling you about our parties but we hope you follow our Facebook group for the club in Sweden. The UK one is a bit on hold so So Tough! So Cute! on 20th December at the Macbeth in London is the last one for a while. But more on that next update.

Alice Samoilova is a vinyl only DJ whose been putting on quite a few nights here in Malmö. Everybody Gets Lonely Orchestra was a fun sixties/indie night that had a house band playing for the dancefloor. The Clitts was her dynamic girl group band. She was a booker and DJ for Ryska Posten which brought Russian acts to Sweden and she was a dance teacher for Indiegympan Heartbeats! - an indiependendent dancegroup. It's super fun that she has agreed to come play her favourite femme fronted records at Too Cute To Puke. Expect a lot of soul, indie and maybe a few Russian girl-groups!

We also have a surprise visit at midnight so make sure you're here in time to see it!

Here's a Spotify mix Alice put together!

Guest Mix #25 by Alpaca Sports: She Told Me To Act My Age

Before you even ask; yes, that is indeed a painting of Alpaca Sports Andreas making his debut in AC Milan.

We don't even know how to follow up on that to be honest.

If memory serves us right we first became aware of Alpaca Sports just before their first single. Our friend Martin (Hi Martin!) told us he had this mate who had recorded a few very twee songs. We got to listen to them and they were really good and indeed very twee. But as we were deeply into the current garage punk scene at that time (we know right, what were we thinking?) and Alpaca Sports' soft and sensitive indiepop just didn't register with us. Then the singles came out and were were probably on a rocksteady binge (try it. It'll change your life). It wasn't really until we were playing records before and after an Alpaca Sports gig a couple of weeks ago we really got them. Instead of the quiet shyness we were expecting, they were this big happy bubble of joy exploding on stage and got everyone in the room including us dancing through most of their set. Super fun and one of our favourite gigs this year.

So naturally we had to ask Andreas for a mixtape of his favourite songs. Eleven first class indiepop songs to swirl around to in the kitchen with your gin & tonic in one hand and a cigarett under the kitchen fan. Hope you like it and get more over at the Alpaca Sports Bandcamp!

Alpaca Sports - She Told Me To Act My Age - A So Tough! So Cute! Mixtape
The Brilliant Corners – Brian Rix
I’ve seen two of their reunion gigs so far and I love how they, after all these years, still are able to perform the songs with so much heart and energy. This one made me burst into tears at Indietracks this summer.

The Cherry Orchard – That Summer Feeling
Cloudberry-Roque gave me the album “Start of our affair” as a gift this summer and I’ve been listening to it like a maniac ever since. It’s hard to pick just one song. I love coming home from work, lie down and listen to this from start to finish.

Fantastic Something – If She Doesn’t Smile (It’ll Rain)
I wonder how many hours (days, months?) total I’ve been listening to this one. One all time favorite.

Teenage Fanclub – Sweet Days Waiting
This song does things to me I can’t explain and is my favorite song to listen to when I’m traveling by train. It makes me feel alone, sad and weak, yet hopeful at the same time. “Sweet, sweet days are waiting there for you”.

The Smiths – Well I Wonder
Oh well. Enough said.

The Pastels – Night Time Made Us
‘Slow summits’ is one of my favorite albums released this year.

Aztec Camera – Walk Out To Winter
A little bird whispered something about Roddy Frame and a solo gig at Popfest Berlin. What happened to that? Hope to see him somewhere next year instead. ‘High land, hard rain’ will always be one of my favorite albums of all time.

The Triffids – Wide Open Road
When you need the loneliest song on earth.

The Hit Parade – In the Hit Parade
No one writes them like this anymore. That’s a shame.

The Desert Wolves – Speak To Me Rochelle
I picked this one up from the ‘Scared to get happy’-compilation (wonderful release by the way). And later went on to Firestation Records and bought the ‘Pontification’ album. Great band, fantastic song!

Brighter – Inside Out
Every mixtape needs an anthem.

Mixtape: You're Gone Again, You Never Want To Stay

Another Monday, another day of work. Well not work. More like returning Buffy comics to the library (a seriously disappointing reading), eating croissants - plain please - and drinking coffee. Picking up some new records at the post office. And then maybe watching Bob's Burgers. Note to self: get a life.

Anyway, we have the third part of catch-up-mixtapes (get the first and second part). A bit more varied than the other two. We've put some old post-punk diy songs one here mixed up with some lovely indiepop stuff and then gone a bit more electronic in the middle with a sweet punk finish. It's, like, all-over the map!

Hope you like this mixtape and if you do like a particular song please support the artist!

Mixtape: Girls Like Me Don't Know When To Quit. We Get Revenge

Happy Monday! Here's the second part of our three part attempt to catch up with great new and old discoveries. This one is pretty warm and fuzzy with a bit of edge in the middle and end. Kinda like a warm bowl of porridge where you've lightly roasted the oatmeal and a few hazelnuts and almonds, cooked it with a bit of whole milk in the water and then served it with a nice sweet ripe banana and some locally produced honey drizzled on top. You get through those first spoons with soft yummy porridge then you get a bit crunch in the middle, then a bit more mushy and right in the end there's that last roasted hazel nut covered in the last drop of honey. OK, we need some breakfast right now.

A bunch of these tracks from are brand new and upcoming releases and you really should go get them right after listening to these sample tracks. Just copy-paste the artist in Google and go buy it weather it's from bandcamp, which most of these bands have, or from their label.

Girls Like Me Don't Know When To Quit. We Get Revenge

Friggin great weekend! Absolutely fabulous. We had confetti ending up in places we didn't realize confetti could end up in, we had tasty biscotti and we had a massive dancefloor so much fun! On Friday our guest-DJ Rebecka blew the dancefloor away.

On the Saturday we finally got to see Alpaca Sports who were great and played for a happy dancing crowd and we also played some records for the student peeps at club Heartland. So much fun!. More photos over at the photo album page and the playlists from both night are a bit further down this page.

Guest Mixtape 24: So Tough! So Cute! Mix by The Rosy Crucifixion

Cover by The Rosy Crucifixion
The Swedish summer has gone complete bonkers. It is, simply put, hot as fuck over here. When not even sitting and drinking cold Mikkeller ales in the shadow of our towering record collection helps us cool down, you know you have to look across to the British Isles and to Glasgow. Why Glasgow you ask? Because that is where the super cool Rosy Crucifixion sing songs like Sunshine Fuck Off to a monotonous beat that would make the Monks and The Fall blush (Ok, Mark E Smith doesn't blush but you get our drift). The slightly dark Garage DIY racket they come up with is highly recommended and very danceable at times.

We discovered the Rosy Crucifixion on the great Glaswegian Some Songs Side By Side compilation last year and are stoked to hear more from them. Although members hail from from Ohio, Guyana, and East Kilbride they have joined together in Glasgow to form a giant unstoppable robot (Wait, that's not it. That's from Voltron innit?). Emily used to have a band called 'Michael Dracula' who put an album out on Ze Records which is frigging awesome. Anyway, they've got a split LP with Wharves coming up in a few weeks on Soft Power Records and that should be great. Love both bands.

The Rosy Crucifixion have lots of songs up on their Soundcloud page and they're also playing the 13th Note in Glasgow on 17th August with Dundee band 'The Creeping Ivies' whose new album they recorded.

Here's the ace mixtape they mixed together. Some really amazing tracks on there. Thanks for putting this together for us guys!

2. Judy Nylon - Jailhouse Rock
3. The Flying Lizards - TV

Guest Mixtape 23: So Tough! So Cute! Mix by Fulhäst

Hello! We've got another swell mixtape for you today and it is compiled by our good friend and drinking buddy Niklas. It's full of lovely angsty pop-punk and indiepop with classic, current and obscure bands and we think you'll really enjoy this one. It's great to bicycle around drunk to in the middle of a Tuesday night. Maybe not that great to listen to after you've cycled into a small bench that should have been lit up (for fuck's sake!) but try not to do that. Really, don't.

Niklas performs under the name Fulhäst and he plays lo-fi sounding gameboy punk with lots of references to pop culture and heartbreak. The second and brand new album Broken is pretty much a break-up album and it's very good and sad one at that. We really excited about getting our hands on it.

Broken is available to pre-order on a limited edition 10" vinyl on Fika Recordings and it's a great looking and sounding record with handwritten lyrics. Our wrist hurt just by looking at it. very much looking forward to our own shiny copy. You should also get the pay what you want digital single What Do You See? and the fantastic LA punk band namedropping song Riot On 1655 N Cherokee Avenue on the Carry On Rioting compilation.

Here' the spanking new video for What Do You See? featuring people from Martha, ONSIND och Ace Bushy Striptease.

Guest Mixtape 22: So Tough! So Cute! Mix by Erika Elizabeth of Expressway To Yr Skull

So Tough! So Cute! mixtape drawn by Erika Elizabeth

Expressway To Yr Skull is a college radio show - yes, a real radio show! - on WMUA at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. We ran into it maybe a year ago while googling some obscure New Zealand Flying Nun songs and it quickly became a must listen in our hunt for new music and classics we've missed.

Erika Elizabeth has hosted the show with the occasional guest since 2008 and plays many a great pop songs your new boyfriend or girlfriend is too stupid to know about. On a typical show you get to hear DIY punk, C86 and jangle pop; girls in the garage and Nuggets mixed up with French ye-ye, noise pop and Flying Nun style indie. And most of it is actually comes from her personal vinyl collection! So cool.

Erika has this great voice (which we may have a bit of a crush on) guiding you through it all with info on labels and releases and we always find something new to play at our clubs. Our favourite find from the last few shows is Joyride! - a great indiepop band from San Francisco. Another thing we like is she plays these, often crazy, Thai, bollywood and other international records in the background which makes a nice contrast.

On every show Erika tends to have a these short 3-5 song bursts of strictly femme fronted bands which, as you can probably guess, is the bit we like the most, so we asked her to put together a mixtape full of girl fronted tunes. It's a really great one so we hope you like it too. And since it's pretty hot today - yay summer! -  we would recommend a nice chilled hoppy IPA to go with this.

You can subscribe and listen to old shows at the Expressway To Yr Skull website and thank you so much Erika for doing this mix for us!

Guest Mixtape 21: RND Indeed by Riots Not Diets

So Tough! So Cute! mixtape drawn by Toby Blackman
Let me tell you people! Riots Not Diets is a DIY music event in Brighton, UK who put on queer/tweepunk/riot grrrl bands and is probably our favourite club we haven't actually been to. We just keep buying their records, stalk them on Facebook and look at their fantastic line-ups and wish Brighton was a wee bit closer. But long distance longing isn't enough so we figured we'd ask Toby to make us a mixtape of songs danced to in the riot-bedroom. Wish we had a riot-bedroom, ours is just a regular one.

Riots Not Diets also put out records under the Tuff Enuff moniker. Their latest is an 18 band vinyl compilation called 'Carry On Rioting', check it and vol. 1 out on riotsnotdiets.bandcamp.com, its only a fiver. Magnificent sounds, some of which have become must-plays at our club. Then go ahead and like them on Facebook and go to the next RND Presents on Saturday, 15 June where Shopping, Daskinsey4 and Dog Legs are playing.

Here's the mixtape and thanks to Toby for putting it together for us. Now go riot.

RND Indeed

Animals and Men - Bad Lover
Mykki Blanco - Wavvy
Pony Up - What's Free Is Yours

Too Cute To Puke returns tonight with an extra hour to party! That's right folks we dance until we drop at 4 in the morning! Our regular guest Ellen Magnusson is our guest-DJ this time - we figured that since she just kept making awesome requests she might as well join us and play them herself! Very much looking forward to her set. Ellen is also our 20th female guest-DJ in a row. And here we though it was hard to find female DJs...

We also have visuals by Humle Rosenkvist. Hopefully this will become a recurring thing with a different visual artist everytime.

Look Heart, No Hands! ♥ Too Cute To Puke

We're thrilled to be playing Look Heart, No Hands! this Saturday. Look Heart, No Hands! is run by three fab ladies who from nowhere got in touch about two years ago and wanted to learn how to DJ. We had a short introduction "play a good song, then play another and get the girls in the room to dance" and off they went and started their own club! So cool. Wish this happened more often actually.

Anyway this is their last night which can only mean that they're off to bigger things. We'll be doing an all girl-set so expect anything from the spanking new Camera Obscura track, which is amazing, to the Supremes via Bikini Kill.

"I'm better off now you're gone, now I know you weren't the one" - ah the Parallelograms, if you only knew how right you are.

We've got another mixtape for you to listen to while you get wasted, paint your fingernails, watch your sister cry or whatever else the Porcharitas sing about in that first track. New fave tracks tracks by Colleen Green and Yo La Tengo - their new albums are both so good. That Yo La Tengo is so gentle. Pups is Rose Melbergs new thing which is great, as you would expect, and so is the new Poppets song - really looking forward to this boyfriend-girlfriend duos new LP!

Coffin Pricks, Teenage Burritos, Sauna and Good Throb are great things from last year we just recently caught up with. Teenage Burritos is a current crush and a 7" will be out on Volar in a month or so. Very much looking forward to that. Good Throb is so so angry. That whole 7" is a must buy. Kizza Ping is a Swedish band from 1981 and Dybbuk is a Czech band from 1991. Both all female and both sooo good. Ste McCabe's 'Queer Clubbing' was on the 'Riot Not Diet' compilation last year. Really good and volume 2 called 'Carry On Rioting' just came out so make sure to go buy that.

Then we have a little sweet track by the Chefs we rediscovered while listening to their 'Records And Tea' compilation. Also, smashing post-punk track by Staring Problem. Last but not least we have Guns For Hire - basically a spoof band who tricked Terry Hall of the Specials to fund their demo and everybody else that they were the next big thing. Apparently Elvis Costello sang its praises. It's a great little anthem for those days you want to bash somebody's head in. Like when your disgusting ex texts you at four in the morning.

Photos and Playlist from So Tough! So Cute! with Sven-Eric

Well that was definitely a night to remember! Ace tunes by a slightly under the weather Sven-Eric. He really put us to shame with his set this time. Check out what he played after these pics! And all on lovely vinyl!

We had two kinds of biscotti, baked by bakerette Hedda and we had tons and tons of sparkly confetti which still, two days after, manages to turn up in places we didn't know confetti could get to... Truly a special night!

Tons of happy people over in our photo album

Hey, here are the photos from last Fridays club - now more commonly known as "Holy shit! Best night ever!". Guest-DJ Rebecka kicked so much arse behind the decks and we had an amazing dancfloor after only a few tracks and continued until the lights went on 5 hours later. An absolutely crazy night!

More photos in the Facebook photo album as usual!

Mixtape: Operator! Operator! This Town Is Full Of Incest!

Woah, the second mixtape in so few days? Well it was either that or a mega-gigantic mixtape last time. Lets just keep it short and sweet. This may be an even better selection if you don't mind us saying so ourselves. Please don't mind.

What do we have this time then? Classic angular post-punk by the Glaxo Babies. Skinned Teen and Dark Times are really ace. Old and new riot grrrl punk. The whole Veronica Falls covers EP is so so good, here represented with a sweet Rats track. Edible Arrangements from Brighton are amazing and have La La Vasquez members and another super group is Nun with members from Woollen Kits and Constant Mongrel among others. Swedish gothpunx Makthaverskan have a new record out as well as Kim Baxter (All Girl Summer Fun Band), Love Cuts and Golden Grrrls. And the rest is just really great too. Hope you enjoy it and if you do go buy something from the bands

The Brat Year - A Recap of 2012

Hello, hope you all enjoyed our best of 2012 mixtape. It felt like a good year when we finally summarised all the new releases in a mixtape.

Anyway, we feel we should summarise the year in clubs nights and parties as well. Because that's the fun bit. Getting to play all those great records to shiny happy kids at the club!

This is what we felt we managed to accomplish this year in terms of clubbing:

- We put on a total of 32 of nights. 14 So Tough! So Cute! and 18 Too Cute To Puke nights in the UK and in Sweden. 4 more than last year despite losing two of our regular venues. Too Cute To Puke was also launched in London which was amazing. Photos from all nights are here.

- There was more discussion about gender equality on stage and behind decks and our friend Jennifer and us did a 'Girls at their best?: Gender and performers at Indietracks 2012' post which was… interesting, lets leave it at that. It's been great to see more all-girl clubs pop up and to see that more thought has been given to this issue though.

We're happy to say that out of 23 nights with guest-DJs 17 had female DJs. It hasn't been that easy finding female punk/indie/soul DJs but everyone we invited was ace despite some playing for the first time ever.

- The mixtapes sadly took a backseat but we managed to feature 4 amazing guest mixtapes by Stephanie Goodman of Shrag / Blue Minkies, KEEL HER, The Spook School and Sofia and Kristina of Like A Girl I Want You To Keep Coming.

- A disappointment was that of the 23 guest-DJs we had 1 returned the favour by inviting us to play with them. This 1 person however invited us a couple of times over the year. So yeah…

There were so many moments that made last year amazing year and it is a hard task to list them all but there are a couple of special ones we have to mention that really stuck to our memory:

We had The Smiths vs Broder Daniel special which was oh so fun. We had Mika Miko - Capricorinations become an anthem at the club. We had a Rough Trade Top 100 indie records and Slumberland Records specials which were very cool to do. As usual there was a hefty amount of emails to ask us to take down photos of people making out with somebody they shouldn't have. Seriously folks.

We had the 5th anniversary for So Tough! So Cute! which was fun and filled with emotion. And the 2nd year anniversary for Too Cute To Puke. Lucy Watusi was amazing whether she played with us in London or in Sweden. Bloody hell what a great taste in music she has. Two dream bookings came through and Comet Gains David Feck and Jon Slade each played stunning sets. Ylwa Skywalker doing several great sets despite fire alarms going off and power outages.

Every single Too Cute To Puke was so so so good. Just incredibly fun to do and to see being so appreciated. We also got to play at the big city festival Malmöfestivalen which was huge. What else, what else… Throwing out an idiot in London and playing Lily Allens  - Fuck You after. We got to play New Years at How Does It Feel To be Loved and also sweet sets in Göteborg. We got to see the Fall! Oh Mark E Smith <3. And grrrl mosh pits!

A couple of thank yous: Ylwa, Kristina & Sofia, Josef & Sebastian, Northern Portrait, Miriam Pemberton, Jon Slade, Elisabeth Östin, Kajsa Tretow, Matthew Rimell, Sven-Eric Nilsson, Lisa & Emmy, David Feck, Asta & Anna, Anna Brynolf, Ida, Linnéa & Karolina and Lucy Antsey for doing great sets. All the door persons in UK and Gracie for helping us find all these people. Sandra for a bed in the UK and everybody else we might have forgotten. Here's a drink to you all and we'll see you in 2013.

What? It's February already you say?

Oh shut up.
